The water hyacinth has glossy green bulbous leaves which are filled with air to keep the plant afloat. The flowers usually appear from August to September and last one day. It has subherb nutrient taking factors due to its long blackroots which also serves as an excellent spawning media and hiding place for small fish. It requires heat and sunlight to bloom. Duckweed has light green ovate leaves, it is a favorite fish snack and can be found in many forms worldwide. It flourishes in the cooler water temperatures of spring and fall and can disappear completely in summer. As duckweed is a perenial, it can re-appear in spring if not completely eaten. Water lettuce looks like floating heads of lettuce or cabbage with velvety lime green deeply veined leaves. Water lettuce re-produces plantlets on side shoots. They have long feathery roots which are perfect for spawning fish and hiding places for the fry. They are a tropical species and prefer filtered light.

Salvinia is a green fast multiplying, hairy leafed, free floating fern that grows in a chain and crinkles when mature. The water fern is a tropical species and prefers sun to part shade.
