Hardy zones: 2-6  Marsh marigolds are one of the most popular marginal plants. It has heart shaped leaves with buttercup type flowers which bloom in April. They prefer to be in a bog setting but can be placed in the pond as long as there isn't much water above the crown of the plant. Prefers part shade to full sun. Blooms spring and fall.

Myosotics scorpioides -                                               Water-Forget-Me-Not    6" scotch pot $9.99 each
Hardy Zones:3-10  The water forget-me-not is a highly recommended, untidy sprawling plant that can creep over pond edges and root in wet soil. It is a reliable and easy to grow marginal that prefers to be planted in full sun at a depth of about 6 inches and will grow to about 6-9 inches in hieght.

  

 

 Pontederia cordata - Pickerel Rush/Reed                   6" scotch pot $12.99 each 

Pickerel rush has deep green glossy leaves with soft blue flower spikes which appear from mid to late summer and from leaf brackets at the top of the stems. The pickerel rush prefers to be planted in full sun to part shade at a depth of 3-5 inches and the plant can grow from 2 - 2½ ft. in height. They produce purple or white flowers from spring through summer. To prevent winter frost damage, put the plant in water so that at least 3 inches of water is above the crown of the plant.

The Monkey Flower has multi-branch slender stems,  tubular snapdragon like flowers are produced freely along spiky stems throughout the summer. The monkey flower prefers to be planted in full sun in shallow water or wet soil.

Hardy zones: 5-9  The arrow arum has dark green glossy arrow-shaped leaves.  The flowers are narrow white spathes which appear in June and sometimes are followed by green and red berries.  Thier height can reach between 1½ - 2 ft. tall.   Prefers full sun to part shade.

Hardy Zones: 7-10  Skunk cabbage can be grown in the bog garden or in 1-2 inches of water on the marginal shelf of a pond. The upright yellow flower spathes have a sweet skunk like odor. Skunk cabbage has 3 foot high leaves with 1 foot high arum flowers that appear in April. It prefers to be planted in part sun to dense shade. Lysichitons need deep soil and are slow to establish.

Hardy zones: 5-11  The bog bean is a sprawling plant with a creeping rootstock which can be ideal to hide the pond edge or it can be kept in containers to keep it under control.  The leaves have three lobes like the broad bean plant and there are pink buds on the stems which turn into starry white flowers during May and June.  Bog beans should be planted in full sun to part shade in a depth of water so they are able to grow out onto the pond surface.

Hardy Zones: 5-10  Exellent for reclaiming natural ponds and oxygenating. Prefers at least 6 inches of water over the crown. Full sun to light shade.

Hardy Zones: 3-11. The arrowhead produces arrow shaped leaves that can reach up to 18 inches in length and bear white single flowers. It prefers to be planted in sun or part shade at a depth of 1-6 inches.

Hardy zones:  8-11  The Calla lily has lush shiny arrow-shaped leaves and can grow to 2-3 ft tall. In the middle of the plant grows the large fragrant white flower with a central yellow spadex. Callas can be grown in full sun but prefers part shade with no more than 2 inches of water covering it’s crown.

Hardy zones:  4-11   Lizard’s Tail has bright green heart shaped leaves with a display of an unusual catkin flowerhead creamy white in color with a slight fragrance. Flower heads usually appear during June and August.  The plant height is between 1-2ft. and it likes to be planted in full sun to part shade in the bog or shallow water. Recently recognized for having strong cancer fighting properties.

Hardy Zones: 3-6   The bog arum is a creeping plant which has 8 inch long glossy heart shaped leaves.  It prefers a sunny site with still water and likes to grow out onto the pond surface.It produces white spathe flowers during the spring and summer.

Hardy Zones: 6-10  The Radican sword can reach a height of 24-36 inches with large waxy ovate leaves. It prefers to be planted in full sun to part shade. White flowers resembling apple blossoms appear through the summer. This plant is good for the back or side of a pond as it can block the view.

Hardy Zones: 7-10 This is a low growing plant that produce runners which creep along the soil and have small heart shaped leaves. Tiny blue flowers with white centers are produced in profusion along the runners from spring through summer. Moneywort prefers to be planted in part sun to part shade in a moist boggy soil, or very shallow water.

Hardy zones: 8-10  A semi evergreen marginal that is ideal for disguising the edges of a pond.  The dark and glossy olive green leaves grow in abundance and offset the dark blue flowers with a white eye which grow throughout the summer.  The brooklime prefers to be planted in full sun or part shade at a planting depth of 0-4 inches and can grow 6-9 inches high.
