 Houttuynia cordata 

Houttuynia has red stems with bluish green heart shaped leaves. It emmits a pungent odor when bruised and can be invasive. It can be used as a filler among taller plants or be kept in seperate pots to keep it under control. Plant in full sun to part shade in moist soil. As the roots can be damaged with frost and ice, cover the crown well with leaf mulch. This plant may not overwinter in water and should be taken out of the pond.  6" nursery pot $9.99 each

Ligularia dentata 'Othello'

Ligularia has large leaves that makes it a good foliage plant. In summer, yellow to orange daisy like flower heads appear. Ligularia prefers to be planted in a moist semi-shady location.

Peltiphyllum

Peltiphyllum is a good foilage plant for bare wet areas and it can grow 3-4 feet tall. In April-May the 2 foot leafless flower stocks appear with globular flower heads and small pink flowers. At the end of the flowering period, umbrella like leaves appear and last through the summer. In summer, the leaves are a bronzy green-gold colour but in autumn, the colouring of the leaves changes to reds and browns.

 

 

 


Lobelia cardinalis - Cardinal Flower

The cardinal flower can grow anywhere from 2 1/2 feet to 6 feet tall and it prefers to be planted in full sun in rich moist soil. It may grow in water in the summer months but should have drainage for the winter.

Rheum - Rhubarb

Rhuem or rhubarb is a large wide spreading plant with varieties that can reach a height of 6 feet or more. The Rhuem is quite a hardy plant and can grow in drier conditions than the Gunnera. During the months of May and June, plumes of creamy white flowers appear on stalks. Other than the edible varieties there are some used just for thier look in the landscape.

Fatsia japonica

Fatsia is an excellent foilage plant for shady areas or part sun. It does best with shelter from the winter winds along walls and in entrance-ways.

Fatshedera - Tree Ivy

An impressive foilage plant with all the nice charchteristics of both ivy and fatsia. Fatshedera can be grown into a standard or be tied on a trellis. It prefers full shade to part sun and is not invasive like it's ivy relatives. 

Hosta -  Plantain Lily

Hostas prefer to be planted in shade to part sun. They have white to purple tinged trumpet shaped flowers that appear in July and August. When planting keep in mind that they are a favorite food for slugs and deer. Noted for thier foliage and many different varieties; please inquire for specific cultivars. 

 

 

Miscanthus sinensis

Miscanthus varieties can grow between 3-8 feet tall or more with gentle arching foliage.They all have corn-like flower heads in late summer. See also our section on marginal grasses for more Miscanthus.
