Aponogeton distachyus - Water Hawthorne
It has oblong red and green mottled floating leaves. Often blooming fall to spring with white and black specked vanilla scented flowers. This plant prefers cool temperatures and may go dormant in the heat of the summer. Prefers full shade to part sun.

Nymphoides peltata - Floating Heart
Floating heart has glossy round leaves that look like a small water lily. It is a vigorous grower and produces yellow buttercup like flowers all summer. Can be very invasive as it grows from water borne runners so it is only recommended for lined ponds. It will  grow in a variety of light levels full sun to full shade.

Hydrocleys nymphoides - Water Poppy
The water poppy can look much like floating heart with smaller thicker leaves. Prefers shallow warm water and lots of sun. This is a tropical plant and will not overwinter outdoors. Each flower lasts only one day but it can be a prolific blommer.

Vallisneria americana - Giant Tape Grass
Prefers calm waters and cool temperatures. As it does best in deeper water; the water clarity should be good to allow the sunlight in. Prefers full sun to part shade
